Sharks are top predator of oceans but shark finning threatens most populations. Nearly 100 million sharks are killed each year to meet demand for shark fin soup. Shark finning thrives off weak regulations; international treaty protects five species. Fins sell for about $500 per pound, according to WildAid which is a group that wants a global ban. More groups like wild aid should be getting involved in establishing regulation suggestions to the chinese government and if the government stubbornly refuses to make change then possibly a global wildlife conservation group can get involved. But with china becoming a growing power who will stand up for the continued existence of the shark species.
